According to a report from Blizzard, Overwatch’s loot box odds are as follows: on average, every 5.5 loot boxes will contain an epic item, while every 13.5 loot boxes contains a legendary item. The math on those numbers breaks down to a roughly 18 percent chance for an epic item in every box and just a slightly higher than 7 percent chance at getting a legendary.

For those unfamiliar with the basic composition of Overwatch loot boxes, a box contains either cosmetic items for random characters or in-game currency that can be used to buy those items. There are four rewards in each loot box, and at least one of them is guaranteed to be rare. Epics and legendaries are, as stated above, much harder to find - and, given the often random nature of how they are given to players, the chase for legendary character skins can be an incredibly time-consuming process.

Blizzard’s drop rates actually don’t seem too bad, however, despite the fact that loot boxes can be an expensive habit for players who are willing to spend real currency on them. It’s also important to note that the Chinese law only requires Blizzard to declare the loot box rates for the region of China, and although it’s unlikely different regions have wildly different drop rates, there is a chance that North American players might have different odds of getting a legendary item than those players in China.

It isn’t like Blizzard really needs to fiddle with loot box rates on a region-to-region basis, though. Overwatch’s over 30 million active players ensures that there are plenty of loot boxes being opened regardless of drop rates, and the rules mandating public drop rates in China aren’t likely to change how often Blizzard’s highly addictive loot box system is used by Overwatch fans.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
