World of Warcraft executive producer, J. Allen Brack, spoke to the community on the game’s forums, confirming that Blizzard was continuing to discuss the possibilities internally, but there was nothing to disclose at this time.

This could indicate that Blizzard does have intentions to make an announcement in the future. Brack continued, saying the focus, for now, is still firmly on Legion post-launch content.

Aside from the typical DDoS attack, Legion’s launch was fairly solid. Over 3.3 million copies were sold and World of Warcraft player count was the highest it’s been since 2010. Since then, Blizzard has been working hard to keep those players and the recently announced patch 7.1: Return to Karazhan should provide enough content to help with that – for a while, at least. Because of this, it’s understandable why legacy servers are on the back burner.

However, there are number of fans who aren’t as interested in new content as they are in reliving the good ol’ days on a legacy server hosting a vanilla version of the game. The most popular fan-made legacy server, Nostalrius, had around 150,000 players before it was forcefully shut down around seven months ago. As a result, Blizzard saw a bit of backlash. Shortly after, the company agreed to meet with the Nostalrius admins to better understand this portion of the community. Afterwards, legacy servers became a popular topic of conversation, but there has been no resolution.

BlizzCon 2016 will be the first show since the server closing and it was viewed by many to be a good jumping off point for finally breaching the subject. Blizzard disagrees. At least the company is considering the idea, but legacy server supporters shouldn’t expect to hear anything new until after the convention. How long after is anyone’s guess.
