The announcement trailer for Morbid makes clear its influences. The game takes place in a dark, Lovecraft-era world with run-down churches, dingy streets, corrupted temples, and nightmarish iconography. Don’t forget the blood, either, which is spilled by the buckets. The Bloodborne and Cthulhu ties to Morbid are palpable, as is Cronenberg’s ghastly body horror.

Morbid’s trailer shows they typical Souls-like gameplay features that fans expect, including health and stamina bars, dodge-rolling, and a directional pad-style quick access inventory. Combat appears tense and challenging, with larger-than-life enemies and bosses to overcome. Morbid’s Steam page does hint at deeper progression systems, including runes and perks.
The story of Morbid may have to be experienced to be understood, but Still Running does have some hints. Players take on the role of the “last surviving Striver of Dibrom.” In this role, players will pursue the Seven Acolytes – beings possessed by evil Gahars. Being a Souls-like, there’s likely much more lore to discover.
Morbid: The Seven Acolytes releases on PC in 2020.
