4K resolution and 60 frames per second is one of the major selling points of the current generation of consoles, so fans were understandably disappointed when it was revealed that Bloodborne wouldn’t be reaching these benchmarks. By all accounts, the PS5 itself is more than capable of doing it, but a hard cap set by the developers prevents it from being so.

Unfortunately, the PS5 is still mostly unmoddable, but prominent modder Lance McDonald has found a way to push Bloodborne to its limits on the PS4 Pro. With his unofficial patch, fans can remove the frame rate cap, and if they also choose to lower the resolution to 720p, the game will run at a beautifully consistent 60 FPS. In order for this to work, players need to be using the boost mode on the PS4 Pro and opt to lower the resolution, as without this it will still struggle to run the game at this level.
This patch was inevitable, and the modder waited to see if Sony would patch Bloodborne itself first. Now that the PS5 has been available for several months and the game never saw any kind of update, he felt comfortable with releasing his unofficial patch. From the looks of it, it has been ready for quite some time now, but McDonald has been holding onto it out of respect for Sony and FromSoftware. Players can download the unofficial patch from McDonald’s patreon, linked as the source at the bottom of this page.
Ironically, since this version can’t be modded and Bloodborne on PS5 is still capped at 30 FPS, this means that players using the modded PS4 version will actually see better performance than those on PS5. The PS5 version will still run the game smoothly at 30 FPS and 1080p resolution, but this is much less desirable for most.
Bloodborne is available now for PS4.
