Two such fans, Lilith Walther and Corwyn Prichard, have been working on a Bloodborne demake that can be played on the original PlayStation for the past year. Going by the Twitter handle Lilymeister, Walther has been sharing video clips of their progress and detailing milestones in the project, such as adding blood splatter effects, death animations, visceral attacks, and a save/load system. The pair’s work has captured the attention of many players who are eager to see Bloodborne PSX completed.

A week ago, Walther and Prichard released a 10-minute gameplay video of the Bloodborne demake, showing the game’s opening cutscene, the menu system, and several minutes of the Hunter running around Yharnam. Today, another trailer was posted, this time revealing that Bloodborne PSX will be released on January 31, 2022, and will be free to play. The two developers have already made incredible progress since Walther first began posting updates nearly a year ago, and the few additional months until release will allow them to give that final bit of polish to the project.

Despite the old-school aesthetic, Bloodborne PSX has faithful recreations of key elements and landmarks of FromSoftware’s iconic game. Even in 32-bit graphics, the infamous werewolf that served as players’ introduction to Bloodborne’s unforgiving fights and quick deaths is easily recognizable. But for two people, recreating a game that will run on 20-year-old hardware is a lot of work, and Walther has explained that they intend to only develop Bloodborne PSX up to Father Gascoigne, the second boss.

While waiting for the release of Bloodborne PSX, gamers interested in trying out another Bloodborne demake can jump into Yarntown, a free 16-bit version developed by Max Mraz. The game takes players through Central Yharnam and also includes the first two boss fights with the Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Bloodborne fans can check out the work of SnazzyAI, who has shared footage of the game upscaled to 4K resolution at 60 fps, giving players an idea of what a PS5 remaster of the title might look like.

Bloodborne is available on PS4.
