The film which may make its debut on HBO Max, Warner’s streaming platform, has given eager fans a few action shots so they can see just how good the suit looks. This take on the Blue Beetle should look amazing if nothing else when Blue Beetle lands later on.
Blue Beetle, though based on a character that first bowed back in the long long ago of 1939, is based on the 2006 iteration of the character, with Jaime Reyes—played by Kobra Kai’s Maridueña—being the man in the mechanical alien bug suit. Angel Manuel Soto is the director bringing Blue Beetle’s adventures to life on the big screen.
In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, when asked about how he feels getting to play the comedic, bold character, Maridueña said, “All I can think about is how exciting it’s going to be. It’s going to touch on a lot of things that haven’t been touched on before in superhero movies…. I haven’t had the chance to put on the suit yet or anything like that. Once it happens, it’ll feel real.”
The film has been well underway for a while, assembling a cast of epic proportions with Adriana Barraza (Drag Me To Hell), Damián Alcázar (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), George Lopez (The George Lopez Show) Harvey Guillen (FX’s What We Do In The Shadows), and Susan Sarandon (replacing Sharon Stone) as the villain of the piece, Victoria Kord. Her character is new but is said to be the wife of Ted Kord, the earlier incarnation of the character.
The pictures show Maridueña not only standing around in the costume, but running along the sidewalk as well as slamming into a cab. The cab’s cabin is crushed under the weight of the Blue Beetle suit, which makes sense if it’s the all-powerful costume of a young kid just learning the superhero ropes—it’s hard work not smashing up more than needed. That said, this is also the DCU where Superman crashed through every building in Metropolis while fighting General Zod so maybe destruction is just par for the course. Insurance companies in the DCU must have sky-high premiums.
The suit looks good, which is a big thing—a lot of superhero suits only look good in motion (Robert Pattinson’s Batman, for example), but the Blue Beetle suit looks good even in grainy photos taken from the set.
Blue Beetle is set to arrive on August 18th, 2023.
